! SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
Handles the day to day operations of the Claims department by performing the following duties:
SUPERVISION:
Reports to: Vice President, Risk Management, Benefits and Purchasing
Supervises: This position has no supervisory responsibilities
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Implement and process Jones Act, Hull, personal injury, pollution, property and marine-related claims from inception to resolution.
Participate in claim-related activities which may require overnight travel and the boarding of tug boats at various locations.
Communicate effectively with claimants, vessel crew, co-workers, vendors, brokers and attorneys on a daily basis.
Demonstrate basic knowledge of the Jones Act and maritime law and familiarity of maritime operations & equipment.
Identify trends early and aid in the implementation of processes designed to address these problem areas.
Effectively work! with the Safety and Operations departments to reduce/eliminat! e claims..
Maintain accurate claim files, notes and expense registers.
Follow through on personal injury claims. (i.e.: approve doctor appointments, physical therapy, prescriptions, work hardening, return to work process, etc.)
Create claim numbers in the Helm system for each claim.
Ensure the vessel completes the correct incident report.
Review USCG 2692 for accuracy.
Review and approve invoices. (P and I, Hull, etc.)
Assign a Case Manager when appropriate.
Send On Notice letters and Denial Letters.
Request reimbursement from third party for damages when appropriate.
Arrange for Surveyors to examine vessels, barges, docks, bridges, locks, etc.
Review Hull claims monthly for repair progress.
Ensure that releases are executed when appropriate.
Gather information for the USCG as requested.
Utilize investigative techniques including the taking of statements.
Participate in 24 hour/ 7day bi-weekly on call duty r! otation.
Other duties as assigned by the Vice President, Risk Management, Benefits and Purchasing, Company President, various department Vice Presidents & the Chairman of the Board.
Perform administrative duties.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors degree preferred.
Three (3) to five (5) years of insurance coverage (Marine and P&C) and claim handling procedures for submissions to underwriters claims processing or maritime operations experience preferred.
Familiarity of the Incident Command System and its various roles.
Proficiency in or knowledge of a variety of computer software applications, including but not limited to Excel and Microsoft Word software.
High level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations and documentation.
Knowledge of office administration procedures.
Ability to operate most standard office equipment.
Attention to detail in composing, typing and proofing materials, establishing priorit! ies and meeting deadlines.
Proficient spelling, grammar and written ! communication skills.
Effective negotiating skills.
Excellent telephone and oral communication skills.
Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
Excellent presentation skills.
Ability to work in a fast paced environment.
Display a significant amount of initiative, conscientious and resourceful.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to inte! rpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
This position requires occasional overnight travel and driving a vehicle as necessary for errands and business related meetings. Employee and/or applicant must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History check and possess and maintain a current valid driver's license in their state of residence. Some overnight travel required to attend conferences, seminars and meetings.
