Location: New Orleans, Louisiana

More details about this position opportunity kindly see the descriptions. The MacArthur Justice Center is seeking two Investigator-Paralegals for its new office located in New Orleans, Louisiana. The MacArthur Justice Cent! er is a public interest law firm that brings high-impact cases targeted at reforming the criminal justice system. The New Orleans office will litigate criminal justice reform cases in Louisiana and Mississippi. The MacArthur Justice Center is opening a New Orleans office to expand its work into the Deep South, and the Investigator- Paralegal positions are an exciting opportunity to be part of this new effort.

The Investigator- Paralegals ("IPs") will perform extensive litigation support, as well as outreach to current and prospective clients and community organizations. The IPs will assist with field investigations, discovery, and evidence preparation. They will also assist the Center's attorneys with case management and support, conduct research, and organize information. The IPs will primarily be responsible for client support and case presentation in th! e class action against Orleans Parish Prison, Jones v. Gusman ! , and may also be required to travel for work in other parts of Louisiana and Mississippi.

Qualifications:

  • Energetic, organized self-starter with a passion for criminal justice reform and a desire to effectuate change
  • Experience working with and for men, women and children who are incarcerated or otherwise involved in the criminal justice system
  • Strong organizational skills, follow-through, and flexibility around changing priorities and deadlines
  • Strong attention to detail and committment to completing fact investigations and legal memorada quickly and thoroughly
  • Willingness to be flexible in responding to client emergencies and urgent litigation needs
  • Ability to objectively investigate facts and effectively communicate findings to litigation team
  • Dedication to building high-quality, trusting relationships with clients, many of whom have experienced severe trauma or suffer from mental illness!
  • Ability to work creatively and effectively as part of a team to develop new campaigns and legal initiatives
  • Ability to work on several campaigns at once and take direction from several attorneys
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Experience using computer systems and databases and willingness to learn internal programs
  • Meticulous record and time keeping skills
  • Experience working on social justice campaigns involving litigation is a plus
  • Spanish language skills a plus
Responsibilities include but not limited to:
  • Researching, investigating and documenting the facts of a case, including detailed intake interviews with prospective clients and witnesses
  • Monitoring conditions inside Orleans Parish Prison, interviewing imprisoned clients and documenting their experiences
  • Investigate and develop mitigation evidence in capital cases as detailed in ABA Guidelines
  • Drafting detailed memoranda reflecting fact-finding and reviewing it w! ith litigation team members
  • Legal, social science, and factual research
  • Note and document signs and symptoms of mental illness and intellectual disability for evaluation by mental health experts
  • Tracking down and obtaining documents
  • Preparing and organizing research, notes and legal documents
  • Managing and maintaining routine client communication (by phone and in person)
  • Case management and support including document management and review
  • Discovery information management and trial preparation
  • Developing and executing organizing and outreach strategies to current and prospective clients and community organizations
  • Willingness to travel and work long hours, including nights and weekends, as needed
