A baccalaureate degree.

SUBSTITUTIONS:
Eight years of full-time work experience in any field may be subs! tituted for the required baccalaureate degree.

Candidates without a baccalaureate degree may combine work experience and college credit to qualify as follows:

A maximum of 90 semester hours may be combined with experience to qualify.

15 to 29 semester hours' credit will substitute for one year of experience.
30 to 44 semester hours' credit will substitute for two years of experience.
45 to 59 semester hours' credit will substitute for three years of experience.
60 to 74 semester hours' credit will substitute for four years of experience.
75 to 89 semester hours' credit will substitute for five years of experience.
90 or more semester hour's credit will substitute for six years of experience.

College credit earned without obtaining a baccalaureate degree may be substituted for a maximum of six years full-time work experience. Candidates with 90 or more semester hours of credit, but without a degree, must also have at le! ast two years of full-time work experience to qualify.

This position is located in the ARCHIVES DIVISION , Baton Rouge, LA. As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as an Archives Specialist 1, 2 or 3, depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant. The maximum salary for a Archives Specialist 3 is $66,685. Function of Work:
To provide for the solicitation of donation, collection, appraisal, acquisition, security and environment, conservation, arrangement, description, loan out of, reference, and maintenance of public records, private papers, maps, architectural drawings, still photographs, motion-picture film, audio and video tapes and machine-readable records appraised to have historical significance. Work also includes locating and securing archival holdings; developing records retention and disposition schedules; providing advice and assistance on records and their preservation providing appropriate storage, imaging and microfilming services; and serving as liaison with local governments and organizations.

Level of Work:
Entry.

Supervision Received:
Direct supervision from Archivist Specialist 3! or higher level Archivist Specialists.

Supervision Exercised:
None.

Job Distinctions:
Differs from Archivist Specialist 2 by assignment of beginning level professional work and absence of journeyman level responsibilities.

Differs from Archivist Assistant 2 by presence of professional entry-level responsibilities.

Examples of Work:
NOTE: In order to provide adequate coverage and services to meet the internal demands and the demands of all clients, persons occupying these positions will be crossed trained to perform any of the listed examples of work and may be called upon to work in any of the programs within the Archives Division.

Arranges and prepares descriptions of archival collections.

Develops finding aids for materials accessioned into archival repository.

Respon! ds to written and telephone inquiries from the public.

Consult! s with researchers to determine their interest and needs in order to recommend to them appropriate research sources and finding aids.

Examines documents and determines need for repair to arrest deterioration and performs routine repair according to established archival techniques; notifies supervisor of documents which requires extensive treatment and arranges for transfer to the Conservation Laboratory.

Performs reference and research concerning historical events, collections and genealogy; answer inquiries and furnishes information relating to historical collections; assists the public in locating informational materials.

Communicates to patrons departmental policies and procedures regarding the availability research use, citation, and duplication of materials maintained by the Division of Archives.

Conducts research of birth, death, and marriage records for patrons and provide certified or non-certified copies of these vital records wh! en requested.

Supervises the microfilming of archival paper vital records when received from the Department of Vital records in New Orleans.

Creates computerized indices and finding aids for archival collections.

Prepares materials received by Acquisition Section for shelving by indicating space locations and accession numbers on boxes, folders and three-dimensional items.

Maintains files of agency records transmittal forms and disposal notice forms for the Records Center.

Assists with general research of archival holdings.

Assists with the preparation and mailing of record disposal notices.

Answers general inquiries from agency representative regarding records they have stored in Records Center. Assists agency representatives with research of their records.

Assists with the planning and implementation of in-house and traveling exhibits.

Consults with Acquisitions Section on identifying materia! ls suitable for display. Arranges for loan of materials maintained in a! rchival holdings for in-house and traveling exhibits.

Maintains inventory of artifacts, documents, and photographs Department borrows from other institutions for exhibits.

Arranges records to be microfilmed for other agencies. Reviews records to identify duplicates, records in need of repair, and records containing confidential material.

Develops and processes microfilm and prepares Diazo duplicates for agencies.

Participates in the conservation and preservation of archival holdings; oversees the reproduction of holdings; reviews and judges requests for the reproduction of holdings.
