The Orleans Public Defenders (OPD) provides representation to indigent criminal defendants in Or! leans Parish. OPD is committed to excellence in the provision of legal services for indigent defendants and holistic, client-centered representation that respects the humanity and dignity of those accused of crimes.
Job Description and Qualifications:
We are seeking a Master's Level Social Worker / Sentencing Advocate to work in our Client Services Division, an initiative to incorporate the provision of social services to our indigent criminal justice clients. The Social Worker / Sentencing Advocate will assist attorneys to provide social work services to OPD clients, through the assessment of client needs and the provision of local services at all phases of the criminal justice process, including pre-trial and post-conviction. Client needs may include evaluations and recommendations for alternatives to incarceration and connecting the clients with treatment programs and social services. In addition, the Social Worker / Sentencing Advocate will be expect! ed to build partnerships with other organizations -- especiall! y those providing direct services for our clients' needs. Lastly, the Social Worker / Sentencing Advocate will assist attorneys in preparation of sentencing advocacy by conducting in-person interviews with clients and clients' family and other people connected to clients, generating complete social history reports and reviewing records to include but not limited to psychological, medical, and educational records related to clients and clients' family.
This position requires knowledge of the criminal justice system including court proceedings as well as knowledge of community programs and their eligibility requirements. Experience gathering records is required along with interviewing experience and applicable techniques. Other qualifications include the ability to remain organized and prioritize assignments and communicate effectively both orally and in writing with various socio-economic groups, fellow staff and members of the criminal justice community. The qualif! ied individual must have the ability to work independently as well as in a team-driven environment.
The candidate must have a master's degree in Social Work and appropriate licensure or eligibility in Louisiana. The position is full-time.
