Background and-or Security Investigation required DUTIES:
Position is located in Dental Service and provides direct patient care to eligible veterans for prevention, remediation and rehabilitation of acute and chronic oral disease. Serves as dental hygienist treating inpatients, outpatients and NHCU residents with a variety of medical and psychiatric disorders. Responsibilities include oral prophylaxis, treating abnormal conditions of the gingiva and instructing patients in oral health care. Responsible for taking and understanding a brief medical history and intercepting any medical complications. In the most serious conditions, notify the dentist; in routine chronic diseases proceed with caution as needed. In addition, will se! rve as part-time dental assistant when not occupied with dental hygienist duties.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

U.S.
citizenship.

Successfully
completed educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in
42 CFR Part 75.
·
Applicants must
be currently licensed to practice as a dental hygienist with a full, current,
and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth, or the
District of Columbia
·
Certification
in basic life support is highly preferred.
GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-8
LEVEL: Requires a minimum of one year experience at the next lower grade level
(GS-7) that demonstrates the following core competencies:
1. Knowledge of state of the art prevent! ive dentistry
measures for patient instruction and training;
2. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology in order to interpret
the examination request accurately; to understand the functioning and
interrelationship of the various organs appearing on the film and the various
stages of the examination to judge the acceptability of the radiograph for
diagnostic use; and to correctly mount them for viewing;
3. Skill in providing individual and group oral health care
instructions to inpatients, outpatients, Nursing Home Care Unit patients, etc.;
and
4. Knowledge of VA, Joint Commission on Accreditation of
Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA), and related regulations and guidelines pertaining to dental matters.
