The Deputy General Counsel will assist the General Counsel in providing legal support to the Company across all of AMERISAFE’s businesses, excluding cl! aims administered by the Claims Department and collection actions managed by the Premium Audit Department to ensure company compliance with laws, rules and regulations of the states where the Company is licensed.
Principal areas of focus will be regulatory law and compliance, employee benefits, human resources and responsibility for corporate records and documents. With respect to regulatory law, the individual will be responsible for assisting with research on compliance insurance laws and regulations, as well as other regulations, which impact all of AMERISAFE’s businesses; monitoring and analyzing regulatory and legislative developments. The Deputy General Counsel will draft, review, negotiate and interpret contracts and agreements as required.
Responsibilities:
Assist the General Counsel in managing work flow and priorities for Regulatory Department personnel.
Provide legal oversight and guidance on rate filings, form filings, and! annual holding company filings to ensure compliance.
! Provide legal review and interpretation for licensing laws that impact the company and its agents.
Review agent background reports as necessary for evaluation and recommendation on suitable affiliates for the Company.
Review and analyze regulatory information and documents from various state agencies such as the Departments of Insurance and Workers' Compensation Commissions, as well as the NCCI, ISO and other rating and reporting agencies in analyzing risks, developing solutions and providing advice to business units.
Perform legal research and analysis as necessary in analyzing risks, developing solutions, and providing advice.
Assist in drafting, reviewing, negotiating and interpreting contracts and agreements.
Review, research and respond to state insurance complaints, which includes evaluating business practices and making recommendations to business team members to ensure compliance.
Assist the General Counsel to e! nforce compliance of the Company’s employee benefits plans under ERISA.
Assist the General Counsel to enforce compliance with the Company’s document retention program.
Perform other specific duties and projects assigned.
Travel, as required.
Experience:
Lawyer with three (3) years experience.
Experience or knowledge of the insurance regulatory environment.
Experience in the workers’ compensation insurance industry.
Strong technical legal skills.
Strong communication skills.
Management experience preferred.
